DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS
FROM FROSBURY FARMHOUSE,
WORPLESDON, SURREY, ENGLAND

SUMMARY
Sixteen building timbers were sampled for dendrochronological analysis from the ground floor, first floor and attic at Frosbury Farmhouse. Twelve individual oak timbers were dated from the site forming a 191-year site mean chronology (FROSBURY) spanning AD 1362 - AD 1552. The sapwood evidence from eight samples indicated an associated felling and produced a felling date range of AD 1537 - AD 1569. This could be reduced by the presence of surviving sapwood to a felling date of AD 1552 - AD 1569. However, two samples were identified as probably providing precise fellings of AD 1500 and AD 1552, suggesting the construction of the cross-wing commenced in AD 1552 or shortly after. A single timber sampled from the ground floor has been re-examined and dating now suggests a later insertion for part of the hall range, felling for this timber having occurred AD 1622 - AD 1629.
