DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TWO OAK TRESS NEAR SHEPHERDS COTTAGE, NR. BORDON, HAMPSHIRE.
SUMMARY
Adjacent oak trees of 297cm and 439cm girth were core sampled at a height of 1 metre at Shepherds Cottage, Nr. Bordon, Hampshire. On the basis of two measured tree-ring sequences from each tree, a 145-year tree-ring chronology spanning 1858 to 2002 was established. The tree pith was not sampled, and therefore, a site specific age estimate based on partial increment core measurements is explored. The analysis concludes that both trees were growing from c. 1837, and distinctive differences of radial growth rate (average of 2.14mm and 4.06mm per year) account for the obvious differences in size.
