(t = 9.6 E.MIDLANDS; 9.0 KENT88; 7.3 LITTLEY2)
The first build was identified as 4 bays, the two centre bays being a hearth
room and a narrower bay containing diamond-set, Jacobean-style chimneys with
a cross-passage behind. The posts have jowls and the roof is of “three queen
strut” construction. The timbers are heavy and there are large windbraces,
which are sagging, which is unusual. The spine beam in the hearth room is
moulded and it has “brooch stops”, which have not hitherto been
dated in Surrey.
The date established is very early for a Surrey
chimney house but further examination has failed to find any evidence for an
earlier heating phase. (Reference VA, v34,
List 135).
