DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM FIVE BUILDINGS IN LITTLEY GREEN,
ESSEX, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Twenty four building timbers were analysed from five
properties in a pilot study for dendrochronological investigation in the
village of Littley Green, Essex. Only seven timbers could be dated but
these were combined to form two relatively long reference chronologies for
Essex. The first, a 113-year chronology (LITTLEY1) spans AD1221 - AD1333,
and the second, a 302-year chronology (LITTLEY2) spans AD1347 - AD1648.
The study illustrates and discusses some problems typically encountered
with dendrochronological analysis in the county. Mabbs Farm produced
unusually long sequences, and five samples from this building were dated.
Two periods of felling AD 1345 - AD 1371 and AD 1556/1557 were identified,
based on the sapwood evidence of five timbers. Felling date ranges of AD
1628 - AD 1660 for Oak House and AD 1586 - AD1617 for Fordhams were
established, both based on the sapwood evidence of single timbers. The
second edition of this report updates a number of aspects of the original
report, most important of which are the sapwood estimates.
