DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
ELM TIMBERS
FROM MILESTONE COTTAGE,
WICKFORD,
ESSEX, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Milestone Cottage is a well-timbered 1½ storey chimney house, it has two
and a half bays and a gambrel roof. Unusually
elm (Ulmus spp.), which is infrequently used in tree-ring studies,
was the only tree
species identified in the construction. Four elm samples were successfully
cross-matched to form an 84-year mean chronology (WICKF-MI). Although the
chronology was not dated, the assemblage of structural components sampled
combines with bark evidence to indicate that construction of this building
occurred in a single phase. The relatively short span of the site mean
sequence established, combined with the current limited availability of
reference chronologies for the post medieval and later periods for the
Wickford area, suggests that the sequence might have failed to date even
if it were oak, the species of tree most commonly used in
dendrochronological analysis in this country.
