DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
FOUR TIMBERS SENT FROM THE OLD
BREWERY,
HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND

SUMMARY
Three oak and one pine sections of building timbers
were sent by post for dendrochronological analysis. Three samples were
sent from the Old Brewery, however a fourth oak sample originated from a
building situated in Tiverton, Devon. Two of the oak sections contained
insufficient rings for dating analysis. An 81-year tree-ring sequence from
the remaining oak timber from the "wall" of The Old Brewery failed to
date. However, a 150-year sequence of pine from the "extension" at The Old
Brewery is demonstrated to cross-date with Scandinavian reference
chronologies, and spans AD 1623 to AD1772. Using currently available
reference chronologies the technique of dendroprovenancing clearly
suggests Dalarna, Sweden (which was called Kopparberg county until 31
December 1996) as the closest source for this imported softwood timber.
