DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM SHEPHERDS COTTAGE,
NR. BORDON, HAMPSHIRE.

SUMMARY
A 181-year site mean called SHEPHERD was created from seven oak
sequences sampled from Shepherds Cottage, Nr. Bordon, Hampshire. The site
mean sequence was found to cross-date with the first ring of the sequence
at AD 1423 and the final ring at AD 1603. Too limited a variety of
structural timbers were dated to propose a construction date for the
cottage as a whole and only three spot dates are presented. However, two
precise felling dates, derived from timbers in close association, provide
tentative dating of the replacement of the first floor joists. A lower
original set of joists were lain with the greater dimension horizontal,
the joints evident in the transverse beam which was dated as felled
spring/summer AD 1583. Two higher level joists, squarer in section, were
most likely both felled spring/summer AD 1603.
