DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TREES
FROM
ST. JAMES THE GREAT CHURCH, THORLEY,
BISHOP'S STORTFORD, HERTFORDSHIRE.

SUMMARY
Four trees were core sampled from the churchyard of St. James the Great
Church, Thorley, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. Analysis of an
adjacent c. 119 year old yew is combined with partial increment
cores of the hollow 518cm girth Thorley yew to estimate that the tree has
been growing since c. 1460. Planting dates identified of 1897 for a
Monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) and 1901/2 for a Coast
redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) coincide with Queen Victoria's
Diamond Jubilee and death respectively.
