DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM THREE BUILDINGS IN LYDD, KENT,
ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Sixteen oak building timbers were analysed from
three properties in Lydd in a pilot study for dendrochronological
investigation on the south eastern tip of Kent. Three timbers were sampled
from 45 High Street (TR03982072), seven from Prospect House, 18-20
Ness Road (TR04472094) and six from Poplar House, Church Road
(TR04322098). Two dated site chronologies PROSPECT and POPLAR are
presented. A total of nine timbers dated from both sites were combined to
increase replication, forming a 109-year reference chronology for Lydd
spanning AD 1456 - AD 1564. Felling date ranges of AD 1572 - AD 1592 for
Prospect House and AD 1575 - AD1595 for Poplar House were established
based on sapwood evidence from 4 timbers and 2 timbers respectively.
