DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM MUNKS COTTAGE, SMARDEN, KENT,
ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Fourteen oak building timbers were sampled for
dendrochronological analysis from the ground floor, first floor and attic
at Munk's Cottage, Smarden, Kent (TQ86504330). The problem of wide
tree-ring growth observed in the timbers was not overcome by the increase
in the normal number of cores taken. Three timbers sampled proved of
sufficient sequence of rings to attempt dating, however, two of these
contained narrow growth events and no dating was established for the site.
Few of the cores sampled were more than 5 to 10 rings from the timber
centre which indicates that further recovery of tree-ring sequences of
sufficient length or quality to enable dendrochronological dating from
this building is unlikely.
