DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TREES FROM BLETCHINGLEY, SURREY

SUMMARY
Nine trees were core sampled from a property boundary hedge of Leyland
cypress (Cupressocyperus leyandii) at the Stables, Bletchingley, Surrey. Problems of density fluctuations
causing false rings indicates that the dendrochronological potential of
Leyland cypress in the United Kingdom is limited. Despite these
dendrochronological problems, all measured sequences could be combined to
form a 17-year site mean called STABLES. Piths dates of 1985 were
identified in six of the trees and evidence suggests that young trees (2
to 7 years old) were planted to create the hedge in AD 1988, or soon
before.
