DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS

CHARLWOOD, SURREY, ENGLAND.

 

SUMMARY

Brittleware Farmhouse is a well-timbered 2 ½ storey four bay house with an exceptionally well-preserved smoke-bay. The roof is clasped purlin with queen struts and curved wind braces. Eight oak timbers were dated dendrochronologically to form a well replicated 187-year site mean chronology (CHAR-BR), spanning AD 1368 - AD 1554. All eight samples are treated as an associated felling. Evidence of bark on one sample provides a felling date in the Spring/Summer AD 1555 and indicates the primary phase of construction commenced in the summer of that year or shortly after.
