DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS
FROM
CHANTERSLUER,
CHARLWOOD,
SURREY, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
The Victorian exterior of Chantersluer
Farm conceals a very fine medieval three bay cross-wing building. The roof
was hipped at the front but gabled at the back, good crown-posts remain.
There is an adjoining but more fragmentary 2 bay open hall.
Ten oak timbers were dated dendrochronologically to form a well replicated
152-year site mean chronology (CHARL-CH), spanning AD 1382 - AD 1533. Nine
samples could be treated as an associated felling, and bark on two of the
samples produced a felling date of Winter AD 1507/8.
Building analysis indicates the adjoining
2 bay
open hall is coeval with the cross wing, and one spot date helps to
confirm this interpretation. The felling date range for a
bressummer timber suggests that the central chimney was inserted between
AD 1541 - AD 1573.
