DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM FULBROOK COTTAGE,
CHARLWOOD, SURREY, ENGLAND.
SUMMARY
Fulbrook Cottage is a crown-post
hall house. Two bays remain from the original three, one of which was
open. There are tension braces and there was at least one gable end.
Six oak timbers were dated dendrochronologically to
form a 143-year site mean chronology (CHARL-FC), spanning AD 1374 - AD
1516. Five of the samples which dated are consistent with an associated
felling and suggest that the primary construction of this crown-post hall
occurred in a single phase between AD 1503 to AD 1535. The remaining
sample dated, from a transverse beam in bay A, indicates its felling
occurred between AD 1525 - AD 1557 which helps confirm the building
evidence that this timber formed part of a later floor insertion.
