DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS
FROM
PAGEWOOD COTTAGE,
CHARLWOOD,
SURREY, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Pagewood Cottage
is a 2 1/2 bay house, with a
narrow end bay, previously thought to indicate a smoke bay. With the
dating below, this now looks to be unlikely.
The exterior has small square panels and
fine tile hanging below a half hipped roof.
Six oak timbers, indicated to
be from three individual trees were dated dendrochronologically to form an
85-year site mean chronology (CHARL-PC), spanning AD 1620 - AD 1704. The
identification of timbers derived from common trees reinforces the sapwood
evidence that construction occurred as a single phase in the Winter AD
1704/5 or soon after. Periods of growth reduction in one tree and growth
release in another are consistent with some form of tree management.
