DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS
FROM STOWE
MARIES,
WESTCOTT ,
SURREY, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Stowe Maries is a 3
½ bay smoke bay house with heavy timbers. It has a continuous jetty,
unusual for the area. The roof is of clasped purlin construction with
queen struts. One jowl post remains and the walls are arch-braced. There
is a small, 2-storey, 2 bay building, 2 ½ metres in front of the jetty
called the "Granary", the rafters are smoke-blackened so a detached
kitchen is another possibility. Four
oak timbers were dated dendrochronologically to form a 155-year site mean
chronology (WCOTT-SM), spanning AD 1478 - AD 1632. Two samples with full
sapwood recovered from the posts of the house indicate that felling
occurred in winter AD 1571/2. A post and tiebeam sampled from the
"Granary" are assessed to be from the same felling and full sapwood on one
sample indicates that felling occurred in the spring/summer of AD 1632.
