DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM AVERYS, HORSHAM ROAD,
RUSPER, WEST SUSSEX.

SUMMARY
Averys has been described as an open
hall with smoke control, the narrow central bay of the 5 bays has
significant smoke blackening. The gabled roof is clasped side-purlins with
queen struts. A fine face wing, also gabled, has a narrow jetty at tie
beam level. Fourteen oak timbers sampled from different possible phases of
construction were dated dendrochronologically to form a relatively well
replicated 199-year site mean chronology (RUSPR-AV), spanning AD 1382 - AD
1580. However, due to problems discussed in the report, only four samples
provided reliable sapwood dating evidence. Three samples (two from hall
posts) could be treated as an associated felling and produced a felling
range of AD 1581 to 1604. This felling range provides tentative dating
evidence for the presumed initial build. Significantly, two other timbers
from a same parent tree indicate that the main hall and face wing were
constructed at the same time. The fourth sample (also from a hall post)
produced a felling date range of AD 1563 to AD 1579, which highlights the
possibility of close phase complexities of development which could not be
resolved without further sampling.
