DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM COOLHAM BARN,
COOLHAM, WEST SUSSEX, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Coolham Barn was originally located at Coolham, West
Sussex (TQ113229), and transported to its present site at Frosbury
Farmhouse, Worplesdon, Surrey (SU969519) in 1980. Ten oak building timbers
from the first build phase were sampled for dendrochronological analysis.
All the timbers were dated from the site forming a 134-year site mean
chronology (COOLHAM) spanning AD 1426 - AD 1549. Three samples retained
complete sapwood producing a precise felling date of spring or summer AD
1549. The precise felling date could be applied directly to four
additional samples through same-tree association. Based on the consistency
of the felling dates, construction of Coolham Barn is most likely to have
commenced in the spring or summer of AD 1549.
