DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF
TIMBERS
FROM OLD PLOUGH COTTAGE, IFIELD,
W. SUSSEX, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
Old Plough Cottage, a very complex and
much altered assemblage, was once the Old Plough Inn.
Six timbers are dated to
established a 171-year site mean chronology (IFIELD-P), spanning AD 1392 -
AD 1562. The first build, now
entirely surrounded by additions, appears to be a 1½ bay fragment of
probably a 3½ bay, dwelling.
A felling date range of AD
1576 - AD 1604 produced from two timbers tentatively suggests a date range
for the first phase of construction. A total of three timbers, associated
with the first phase, cross-match extremely well against a number of
reference chronologies established nearby, providing good evidence that
these timbers derived from a local source.
A substantial jowled post produces a
felling date range of AD 1485 - AD 1517.
However, the building evidence indicates that this timber is integral to
the first phase of construction and therefore it appears likely that this
timber has been re-used, possibly from a now unidentifiable earlier build.
Two timbers possibly sampled at the heartwood/sapwood boundary produce
felling dates ranges slightly predating the first phase, but these timbers
do not appear to be locally derived which supports the interpretation that
they are stockpiled and/or re-used timbers.
