DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL
ANALYSIS OF OAK TIMBERS
FROM 3 BUTTER STREET,
ALCESTER,
WARWICKSHIRE, ENGLAND.

SUMMARY
3 to 5 Butter
Street comprises of three main bays and an additional spere truss. The
main trusses have mid-rails, cambered tiebeams, collars and queen struts
between the tiebeams and the collars. The roof includes a single set of
butt purlins, with windbraces. Truss B has been interpreted to have
carried a unique shelf, presumed for storage, in the part of the hall used
as a parlour. Sampling was limited to 3 Butter Street which comprises of
the first bay of this building. Five oak timbers were dated
dendrochronologically to form a long 126-year site mean chronology (ALCES-BH)
spanning AD1319 - AD1444. Five samples all from truss B dated, with full
sapwood recovery providing a felling date in the Winter AD1444/5. This
suggests the primary phase of construction commenced in the winter of that
year or shortly after. A felling date of winter 1713/14 produced
from a rail, provides a tentative date for the extension of 3 Butter
Street to the west.
